Vacation Rental Tips

Renting a beach house can be an incredible experience, but a few planning steps can make your stay even better. Here are some tips for a great vacation:

1. Check the Amenities before booking

• Make sure the house has essentials you require like beach tags, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a well-equipped kitchen, and laundry facilities.

• Look for extras, like beach gear (chairs, umbrellas, and coolers), outdoor showers, grills, and board games. These items may be available for rent if not provided by the home. Note: owners may not have the same amount of chairs or umbrellas from photos. These items may break or walk during the season. They aren’t an essential amenity so they are not always immediately replaced

• Ask about parking availability, especially if you’re staying near a popular or crowded beach area.

2. Inspect the Location Carefully before booking

• Be aware of the exact location. “Beachfront” may differ from “beach access” or “close to the beach.” Use maps or satellite views to see where the property is. Also consider other places nearby on maps. We’ve had some of our clients stay at a spot near a mini golf course that played music and had bright lights until pretty late at night.

• Check proximity to local amenities like grocery stores, restaurants, and shops if you’d prefer not to drive.

3. Know the Tide Schedule

• High and low tides can affect accessibility, views, and safety. If you plan to fish, surf, or swim, consider the local tide schedule. Little kids often prefer playing in the tidal pools formed by low tide.

4. Prepare for Bugs and Sand

• Beach areas can be prone to mosquitoes, green heads and sand flies, especially in the evenings. Bring bug spray and anti-itch creams.

• Keep sand at bay by setting up a rinse station if the property doesn’t have one. Have extra towels and a mat at the entry to keep sand outside.

5. Pack for Beach-Specific Conditions

• Stock up on sunscreen, after-sun lotion, and wide-brimmed hats for sun protection.

• Bring reef-safe sunscreen if you’ll be snorkeling or swimming near coral reefs.

• Have a first aid kit with waterproof bandages and supplies for minor injuries.

6. Secure the House and Protect Valuables

• Lock doors and windows when you’re away, as beach areas can be more accessible to passersby.

• Keep valuables in a safe or hidden spot, especially if you’re staying on a busy beach with high foot traffic.

7. Check the Property’s House Rules and Cleaning Fees

• Review any rules for cleaning, garbage disposal, and noise, as beach communities often have noise restrictions. Garbage is a big deal. Rules will indicate where cans must be placed and how to secure the lids. Removal of cans from street should also be included in the instructions.

• Understand the check-out procedures, as some rentals may require more cleaning than standard accommodations. Check-outs aren’t very flexible during the peak season so start planning the morning before. I know… a bummer… but there is a lot that goes into moving out.

9. Plan for Beach Traffic and Weather

• Arrive early or late on your check-in date to avoid traffic. Many beach towns have heavy summer traffic, so plan extra time. Check in times are typically in mid afternoon to allow time for cleaners.

• Check weather forecasts, as beach weather can be unpredictable. Be prepared with raincoats or tarps for rainy days.

10. Have a Flexible Attitude

• Beach houses sometimes have quirks (like a little extra sand everywhere). Embrace the laid-back atmosphere and relax!

These tips will help you enjoy a smooth and relaxing stay at a beach house, so you can focus on soaking up the sun and surf!
