Postcards
Once up a time (not that long ago) I used to send postcards to my friends and family while we were on vacation. I remember going to the local Hoys (5-10 store) to pick up a bunch of postcards right before our trip was over. I would always pick photos of beach scenes. I would then sit down in my beach chair and write out one for each set of my grandparents, one for my best friend and sometimes one to myself. I’m sure it was almost illegible but at least my loved ones knew they were thought of while we were away. I also loved receiving the post card I wrote myself days later after the fun was over.
Nowadays… social media makes it so much easier to share where we are and how we are enjoying ourselves.
Are postcards a lost form of communication? I hope not. There is something special about receiving mail that is not a bill and not just for a special occasion. It is also great practice for our kids to learn how to address the postcard, come up with a greeting line, practice penmanship, etc.
On your next vacation, pick up a few postcards for the kids. Make it an activity. Just don’t forget the stamps… there definitely were years where I’d send them after we returned home:)
