We love to bring our furry friends on vacation. Here are some tips for finding the best dog-friendly vacation rental:
Be sure to read the rental’s pet policies carefully. Look for details on size restrictions, breed restrictions (if any), pet fees or deposits, and any rules regarding pets being left alone in the rental. It is difficult for us large dog owners to find accommodations for our pets. Our dogs are pretty lazy and not barkers so they make perfect guests ( minus the shedding).
Some amenities are definitely more important than others. Consider rentals that offer amenities for pets such as fenced yards, designated pet areas, pet beds, food bowls, or nearby pet-friendly attractions like parks or beaches. Our dogs are large and have used hotel dog beds as pillows. We love being able to walk to a dog friendly bar or out for ice cream with them.
Checking reviews from previous guests who traveled with pets. Their experiences can give you insights into how pet-friendly the rental actually is and whether there were any issues or positive aspects regarding pets. There may be a neighbor that complains that may be mentioned in a review. In our experience we were fortunate to have pet friendly neighbors too!
My dogs have as much stuff as a human. Between furniture covers, lint rollers, food, their bowls and stands, dog towels for rain, meds and their beds – it takes up a lot of space. This will help make sure your pet is prepared for travel and behaves well in new environments.
Be a responsible pet owner by cleaning up after your pet, keeping them from causing damage to the rental property, and following any rules or guidelines set by the host. Our host left poop bags for guests as a reminder to pick up in their fenced in yard.
